YPPS Hosts ACUP+ Conference and receives collegiate cup and two print awards

Yale Printing and Publishing Services (YPPS) teamed up with the Association of College and University Printers (ACUP+) to host its 54th annual conference here in New Haven. The event took place over four days in early April at the Omni Hotel, Yale with keynote speakers, breakout sessions and a vendor fair. This lively event included over 100 individuals from the US, Canada and the UK representing 85 academic institutions and 40 industry partners. Attendees learned about the latest technologies, equipment, and trends or shared best practices associated with copying, printing, mailing services, copier management, copyright management or graphic design.

Conference Highlights

While there were three full days of talks, dinners and activities here are a few highlights:

Jack Callahan, Senior Vice President for Operations at Yale was a keynote speaker during lunch, which was held at the beautiful Yale Divinity Refectory. During his speech about Yale, he recognized YPPS leadership for its continued efforts adjusting to the changing needs of the university. This included updating equipment, software, and process changes resulting in workflow efficiencies and reduced costs.

Trends and hot topics centered around large format printing, copy-rental programs and the latest hardware and software.  Many attendees also used this time to network or catch up with old friends they’ve made over the years through ACUP+. Everyone always enjoys the annual t-shirt exchange and a few lucky members went home with a Yale shirt. New members were treated to a welcome program featuring information about the organization and the conference.

It was not all work; there was time to see and taste the local sights and of course New Haven pizza!  Attendees were treated to tours of the YPPS facility, Yale’s museums, and Old Campus in full springtime bloom! The campus tour ended at the Yale bookstore with many attendees taking home some Yale-themed gifts. To give folks a taste of New Haven history, one dinner was held in the lobby of the venerable Shubert Theatre. Some attendees brought guests who enjoyed visiting Mark Twain’s home in Hartford, hiking at East Rock Park, and a tour of the Thimble Islands in Branford.

The last night featured a gala dinner where awards are handed out and the location of next year’s event was announced. YPPS won two first-place awards in canvas/ fabrics and wide format /poster for the Yale Founder’s Day and Tanner Lecture posters. In addition, Yale was presented with the A-Cup award given only to colleges and universities that host the event. The host school keeps the A-Cup presenting it to the next university/college who hosts the conference. The A-Cup had not been presented in over 10 years, so it was a great honor for YPPS to receive it.

Special thanks to John Heine, YPPS Digital Production Manager, who worked closely with the ACUP+ committee to bring this event to New Haven and coordinate many of the onsite details. For his efforts, he was honored by the Connecticut Convention & Sports Bureau (CTCSB) for his work in helping to bring an event to Connecticut that has a profound impact on the state’s economy.

Started in 1964, the ACUP+’s mission has been to strengthen educational in-plant and mail operations by promoting and supporting learning opportunities, shared knowledge, and collaboration. Each year the ACUP+ conference is held at a different location; the last time it was at Yale was in 1972. Next year the event will be held in April at the University of Nebraska.
