Celebrating 25 Years of the World Wide Web

Today marks 25 years of the internet. On this day in 1989, Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist at CERN invented what would come to be known as the internet. When the World Wide Web was initially conceived it was described as “a wide-area hypermedia information retrieval initiative aiming to give universal access to a large universe of documents.” The world’s first website however, did not go live until December 20, 1990. It is barely recognizable from a word document but the incredible impact that it would have over two decades later continues to influence how we design, cultivate information and interact. Click here to see what that first website looked like. To learn more about CERN and the invention of the World Wide Web, click here.
