Batman Day: Bruce Wayne Went to Yale?!

Today marks the 75th birthday of one of our greatest comic book heros. Most of us are aware that this renowned crime fighter has the every day alter-ego of Bruce Wayne, but did you know that the celebrity philanthropist received his law degree from Yale University? Typography Tuesday: Hand Lettering

Typography and hand lettering is deeply rooted in human history. Most of us are familiar with Johannes Guttenburg and his work with creating the first letter punch and typefaces. With the help of technology, typography has progressed from the letter punch, and some think it has lost that human touch. 3D Printing and the Elm City

3D printing is causing a big hubbub lately. The trend hasn’t been missed by the Elm City–The New Haven Free Public Library on Elm Street has acquired a MakerBot of its own. Classes offered for those interested filled up quickly.  This initial summer pilot will be reviewed and the library will decide how to move forward. Design at the 2014 World Cup

As the 2014 World Cup draws to an exciting close, with Germany beating Argentina (1-0), YPPS wants to highlight some of the design related to an international spectacle like this.  At a lengthy, closely watched event like the World Cup, brand identity and design are integral. Design and the Evolution of the American Flag

As the United States rings in 238 years of independence on Friday, July 4th, Fast and Company highlighted a very interesting design that surveys 48 different flags used by the sovereign colonies and the United States. The design depicts the variety of early American independence flags that range from the traditional (the 1775 Continental Colors banner) to the iconic (the 1775 Gadsen design) to the more eccentric (the 1775 Bedford banner). The graphic (below) depicts 247 years of american flags. The current 50-star flag was adopted in 1960 with the elevation of Hawaii to the union.

Ten years ago 3D printing became more widely accessible.  How fast it would proliferate the market was, at that time, unpredictable. 3D printing actually dates back to the 1980s, but the modern form of the process was only developed in the mid-2000s.

Reunion Schedules and Ephemera

YPPS hopes all Yale alumni and their families visiting for reunion weekends are having a great time! As a department we’re honored to produce this year’s Reunion Schedules in combination with the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) and design geniuses Angie Hurlbut and John Gambell, of the University Printer’s Office.These beautiful booklets allow returning alums to navigate their way around campus during their return visit to the Yale campus. Yale’s Reunions are filled with special events, gatherings, exhibitions, and time to reconnect with old friends.
